Amazing Quilts by Grace

Quilts and Workshops by Grace Errea

Amazing Quilts!, from Pattern to Finished Quilt (3-4 Days) – Supplies

Essential Supplies: Below are supplies for the entire workshop.

1) For the Value Exercise:

All necessary supplies will be provided by the teacher in the class kit

2) For the Machine Applique Exercise:

Fabrics:

You will be able to choose a simple pattern from the ones suggested by Grace, and se the colors I used, or choose your own colors.  Bring lots of scraps in many values.  From lightest light to darkest darks.

In some patterns the background is created in the same manner as the focal point.  Other patterns need a whole cloth background. Verify the quilt size as documented on the web, but most quilts do not exceed 24″ x 36″.  For these, choose fabrics that do not have a distinctive pattern and are light in value for dark focal points, or dark in value for light focal points.  For Landscapes, be aware of directional fabrics for sky and water.

Other Supplies

Quilting will be demonstrated but no sewing machine is required in this 1-3 Day class. For longer workshops/seminars, additional supplies are listed at the end.

  • Board – Insulation Board “ 1 ¼” thick, about 20″ x 30″.  And also, Foam Core 20”x30” (optional).  If you can bring the larger 30″x40″ that is even better.
  • A piece of “Insul-Bright” needled Insulated Lining, the size of your board, for board protection (optional).
  • Brush – soft, ¼” wide
  • Craft knife such as Xacto
  • Eraser
  • Freezer paper roll – 18″ wide is preferable
  • Iron
  • Paper, lots of scrap paper.  Can be newspaper, paper bags or any scrap paper you have
  • Pens – “Sharpie”  permanent marker Fine point (one in black and one in red), Extra Fine point (black only), and ballpoint
  • Pencils –  “Prismacolor” drawing pencils- red and green, and erasable colored pencil, any color. I prefer blue or red
  • Pins- ”Extra Thin” Silk Pins 1”
  • Pressing Cloth, Teflon type, for applique, any size but the larger the better
  • Quilting Ruler – 18” – 24”
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Scissors – fabric, paper
  • Tape – painter’s multiuse or masking
  • Tweezers – long handled
  • Vinyl- clear such as a painter’s drop cloth or clear vinyl table covering  1 or 2 Mil. Approximately 30″x 40″.  I prefer the painter’s drop cloth, 2 mil as it is clear enough to work with and very easy to handle.

Kit Content:  Pattern used in the technique and Heat-Set product.

2) For the Finishing Exercise

  • At least 4-6 or fat-quarters that will be used in place of a quilt top. Muslin is preferred so that you can see the quilting patterns that you will develop.  However, if you prefer, you can substitute with fat-quarters of some light colored unprinted fabric.
  • Same number of thin batting (Warm and Natural or similar), also fat-quarter size
  • Same number of backing fabric fat-quarters.  Muslin is also good, or any low priced fabrics that can serve as a backing.
  • Approximately 1 yard of contrasting unprinted fabric that will be used for borders, bordings and bindings.  This should also be very low cost piece of fabric.
  • Thread.  A 50 wt. cotton in a medium beige or gray color.
  • Machine Sewing Needles – 70/10 and 80/12
  • Sewing Machine with and Embroidery foot (wide open toe used for zigzag) and a Darning foot (free motion foot).  Do NOT forget the electric cord and foot pedal!!!
  • Bobbins, Pre-fill at least one with a medium color (grey or beige)
  • Flower head straight pins (colored), a few if different colors.
  • Small  quilters’ safety pins

As described above, this class requires a kit provided by the teacher that contains all the necessary items to create the Perfect Fabric Gray Scale, a pattern of your choice and the Heat-Set product. (Kit fee to teacher: $25)
