Thread Drawing and Quilting the Art Quilt – Supplies

Supplies:

  • Sewing machine and necessary supplies (bobbins, electrical cord, foot pedal). Bring the ¼” sewing foot and a Free Motion foot (darning foot). A number of machine needles (70 or 80).
  • Water-soluble marker (the “blue” one)
  • Embroidery hoop. 6-8” is best. Screw or spring, wood or plastic. My favorite is the metal spring plastic, very thin hoop.  Grace will have some for Sale.
  • Small sharp scissors for thread cutting.
  • Sharpie extra fine point permanent marker.
  • Pins and safety pins.

For the Quilting and Thread Drawing exercise:

  • A least 4 fat quarters of very light colored, unprinted fabric, fat quarter size.   No designs on this fabric, please.  Best is to bring muslin fat quarters. Choose either off-white (can have tone on tone design) or even a batik or hand-painted fabric will work very well, as long as it is very light (pastel) in color.  We will use them to do quilting samples and to practice the Machine Drawing.
  • Same size pieces of batting material for each
  • Same size backing fabric for each. Must be a light pastel in color so it does not show though the top. I use the same fabric on the front and on the back.
  • Threads to quilt the designs. Choose dark threads that will contrast well with the background fabric. Dark purple, brown, dark red, greens, etc. work well. Regular thread (size 50) is fine but a slightly thicker thread works even better for the drawing exercise (size 40 or 30 cotton).
  • Regular cotton thread for the bobbin in a color to match the thread you decided to use on the top.
  • Quilting gloves.
  • Pins and safety pins

Note: Prior to the class, sandwich one of the tops, batting and backing fabrics and secure with safety pins or straight pins.l  Only one, please.

Kit Fee:  There will be a $10.00 kit containing a number of favorite patterns to use to practice and also a number of stabilizers to try.  Grace will have hoops for sale and additional stabilizers if you decide you like some.
